Heads up to all our retail friends out there. There will now be new legal requirements regarding country of origin labelling, and it will come into force July 2018. ACCC deputy chairman Dr Michael Schaper stated on 8 May 2017 that “In particular, businesses should review any claims on their product labelling or advertising which suggests that the product was ‘Made in’ a particular country.” The ominous warning from Dr Schaper stipulates that “Consumers are often willing to pay a premium for products that originate from particular countries, but they need to be able to trust the labels. Failure to label products correctly may expose a business to penalties of up to $1.1 million.”

After having received over 3,000 complaints over the past five years the ACCC has finally had enough. If you find yourself facing a consumer complaint or would simply like advice please feel free to give us a ring at Priority Business Lawyers. Alternatively, if you would like to educate yourself further on the recent changes in anticipation of 1 July 2018 please head over to the ACCC web page for a detailed guide on country of original labelling: Click Here
